DESERT ORACLE #10

Desert Oracle #10

We’ve got a couple of classic episodes on the radio in Joshua Tree/Yucca Valley/29 Palms tonight, as we’ve been mailing & otherwise distributing Desert Oracle #10, the latest of our pocket-sized periodicals all about the strange & mysterious desert lands.

Listen to these episodes tonight 10-11 p.m. on Z107.7 FM in the Mojave High Desert, streaming online if you’re out of range: “Owl’s Eye View (#164)” and “Superbloom! (#050).” (Some very moody desert soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver on both episodes. Have you seen the RBBS Bandcamp page?)

You can subscribe to the print magazine right here on this website. Four issues delivered to your mailbox, hopefully several this year!

EPISODE #146: WINTERTIME TALES FOR A STORMY NIGHT

Live from the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles, here’s our final show of the 2021 Tour, with your host Ken Layne and live solstice soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver. Occultists and mystics, cultists and coyotes, all gathered together in uneasy alliance on this Christmas Eve.

(There’s no show on the radio tonight in the High Desert, as our home station is playing Christmas music tonight. Photos by SW Lauden.)

EPISODE #119: ALIEN CORPSES OF THE GREAT BASIN

alien ufo crash Great Basin National Park

You ever drive the “Loneliest Road In America”? That’s what they call U.S. 50, across the Great Basin Desert through the middle of Nevada. Not many people out there, not a lot going on. Just as we like it. The mystery visitors like it, too. They like the quiet. They need the wild mountains and desert valleys of the Basin and Range. We hope em like this: Episode #119: “Alien Corpses of the Great Basin,” with all-new spacey soundscapes by our own RedBlueBlackSilver. (And we’re on Spotify, too.)

And way back in 1952, so the story goes, 16 little alien friends were found dead in the wreckage of a glowing oval craft that smashed into the side of a copper mine near Ely, Nevada. Find out more, if you dare, tonight at 10 p.m. on Joshua Tree’s own Z107.7 FM, or streaming from Z1077FM.com or Tune In.

Or listen here, if you’re out of FM range:

#116: THE LOCAL ANGLE

Might be a nutty new year on the national news, but here in the desert we are just trying to get along and not got crushed. What happened at the Yucca Valley protest on Friday? Well good luck getting the straight story on that. With guest Brendan Maze and new sounds by RedBlueBlackSilver.

#112: ON A COLD DESERT NIGHT

desert oracle

A new show for Friday night, yes! And on SUNDAY, 12/6/2020, join Ken Layne and Anna Merlan for a Skylight Books virtual event, where we’ll be telling ghost stories and reading something weird from the new book and talking with you, if you choose to talk to us. Virtually, sadly. No whiskey & kissin’. Maybe next time. And we don’t know who “Lockdown Willie” is, either. It just sounded good.

Oh and this one, Wednesday evening at (virtually) McNally Jackson in New York: A conversation about the desert and probably everything else, with New York Times style editor Choire Sicha, famously of The Awl and Gawker and many other things.

Listen to tonight’s show, Episode #112, on the FM radio, from Amboy to Zzyzx (Fridays at 10 p.m. on Z 107.7 FM), or streaming from Z1077FM.com or streaming via Tune In or get the free podcast. Hey and if you listen on the radio, there’s a bonus episode after that. A repeat, yes, but it’s nice to hear a couple of shows together on the radio. New soundscapes from RedBlueBlackSilver, and don’t forget to check out his new album, Five Flora.

OUR BOOK IS OUT ON DECEMBER 8, pre-order from your favorite bookseller today & you’ll have the book as soon as it’s out.

#098: THE MYSTERY PIG

DESERT ORACLE MYSTERY PIG
Photos by Derek in Yucca Valley.

What is this weird creature that turned up dead in Yucca Valley, in the Mojave High Desert? Wildlife biologists are baffled, and so are we. “Derek” sent these photos. You’ll hear the story tonight. The REST of the story. (Or listen to the podcast but NOT UNTIL DARK.)

What sort of cruel god would create such a useless (and dead) animal? Well probably the same one that’s behind the coronavirus and police violence and million-dollar hospital bills. Makes the Trickster spirits seem absolutely benign in comparison.

Our July 17 live broadcast at Pappy & Harriet’s, is sold out so if you didn’t get tickets, you won’t be able to get tickets at the door. But don’t worry, don’t despair, you can always hang out in Pioneertown and listen on your car radio, or whatever radio you’ve got. We’ll have a frequency for you soon, stay tuned.

You can listen to tonight’s program at 10 p.m. on KCDZ 107.7 FM, across the High Desert. E. Morricone memorial soundscapes from RedBlueBlackSilver. Thanks to everybody who supports the show on Patreon. Just click below to support our desert institute:

But while we ride the storm out, here’s our most recent Campfire Stories night, from January 2020, with a brand-new RedBlueBlackSilver soundtrack and some other weird stuff. And it’s an hourlong special episode, too. Listen at 10 p.m. tonight on Z107.7 FM across the Great Mojave Wilderness or do the podcast shuffle, if you prefer: #091: CAMPFIRE NIGHTMARES.
