EPISODE #251: THE AUTUMN EQUINOX

September 22 is the day and 11:19 a.m. is the hour when Fall finally arrives in the Mojave Desert. Add an hour for Nevada and Utah, which both share a little of the Mojave with California and Arizona. While it’s still hot on the desert floor, the mountains are cool and the aspens are changing color. Too far from the aspen groves? If you’re in the desert, there are Fremont’s cottonwoods somewhere near you, and few trees have such fantastic fall colors.

This is EPISODE #251: THE AUTUMN EQUINOX, with new soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver. Written & hosted by Ken Layne. Listen on the radio in Joshua Tree and across the Mojave High Desert, Friday nights at 10 p.m. on KCDZ 107.7 FM..

EPISODE #200: THE AUTUMN TINT OF GOLD

Ken Layne at the board, Radio 1 Prague, 1992.

This autumn is getting off to a strange start, as here in the Mojave High Desert there are carpets of little yellow wildflowers thanks to the hurricane, old Hurricane Hilary which soaked us all pretty good a month ago. Never seen so many weeds in late September. Happy Equinox from Desert Oracle Radio, celebrating 200 episodes with tonight’s show.

And that means this is EPISODE #200: THE AUTUMN TINT OF GOLD. Thanks for supporting this advertising-free podcast through our Patreon. Listen to the radio broadcast tonight at 10 p.m. on KCDZ 107.7 FM in Joshua Tree & the Mojave High Desert. Musical soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver.

We’re hanging on to Halloween like a gila monster, with our spooky broadcast from Friday night. What exactly happened to Jim Sullivan, the now-beloved singer-songwriter who was barely known in the 1970s and then disappeared in the New Mexico desert? Music writer Jason P. Woodbury joins us to talk about the re-release of Sullivan’s self-titled 1972 album; Jason wrote the liner notes for this Light In the Attic Records release.

Then we are joined by L.A. witch/journalist Laura Bolt, to talk about the magic of autumn and the spooky scene in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree.

If you want to come to our events, take a look at our Events Calendar, and maybe come to November 7 Campfire Stories at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, 7 p.m. this coming Thursday at the Commune firepit. (Use the code DESERTORACLE to get a room discount.) And yes we have a Patreon now, which means we are humbly seeking your membership to support Desert Oracle Radio, our Desert Oracle field guide, and all the curious events & performances we do up here in the desert.

Don’t forget our Halloween bonus episode, recorded at the campfire one year ago. It is Episode #069. Nice.

Get the podcast on Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, TuneIn, etc.

And remember to listen Fridays at 10 p.m. on Z107.7 FM in Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms & across the High Desert, “from Amboy to Zzyzx.”
