Gold Hill Sandman, Nevada

A terrible 10-foot-tall monster was sighted on September 15, 1980, just off Nevada State Route 341, north of Silver City, just past Devil’s Gate and to your left. Part of the old American Flats Comstock mining complex, as you’re coming up on Gold Hill. The witnesses were security guards for the mining company. A busy job because the various ruins of the old mining complex, which closed down by 1927, were the favorite hangout of kids and teenagers and hippies and whole families from the small-town desert hills. In part because there’s a swimmin’ hole in the creek there, down in the trees beneath the old mill. People would come in on dirt bikes and ATVs, driving pickups and hotrods, to escape the summer heat in the cool shade of riparian cottonwoods and willows. The creature watched them, from above . . . .

EPISODE #241: THE VANISHING BOY OF NORTHERN ARIZONA

Here’s how the Channel 12 news in Phoenix began the story, Thursday night on the 10 o’clock news: “God sent that dog to rescue my son.” These words were spoken by the toddler’s father, Corey Allen, outside the family’s home on the west side of rural Seligman, Arizona. Corey Allen says he was working on the roof, Sarah Allen was inside with their youngest. And two-year-old Bodin Allen went outside to play.

But when Bodin Allen’s mom called for him, he didn’t answer. He wasn’t there. And after an hour of frantic searching beneath a darkening sky, the Allens called the Yavapai Sheriff’s Department and before long there were dozens of search-of-rescue volunteers and deputies searching the area. Helicopters with spotlights scoured the plateau, the pilots reporting two mountain lions prowling the territory. A rancher named Scotty Dunton discovered the blond-headed toddler in pajamas, seven long miles away from home in the backcountry to the west. The boy was coming up the driveway, along with Scotty Dunton’s big ranch dog, Buford the Anatolian Pyrenees. This is EPISODE #241: THE VANISHING BOY with soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver. Jesus loved wilderness and often talked to ghosts, after all. And that’s something people of any philosophy can enjoy.
